Chandigarh Mayor Polls Postponed; BJP Fears Defeat Says Congress

The scheduled mayoral elections in Chandigarh today have been rescheduled for later. A text message informed several councillors that Anil Masih, the candidate for election presiding authority, was ill, which caused the elections to be postponed. Reacting to the incident, the Congress said the Bharatiya Janata Party “wasn’t ready to face defeat”.

“It is informed that a telephonic message has been received regarding the ill health of Sh Anil Masih, who has been nominated as Presiding authority for the meeting scheduled on 18.1.24 for the post of mayor u/60 (a) read with Regulation 6(1) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation(Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulation 1996. In view of the above, it is requested not to reach the MC office till further orders are received,” the message received by several councillors at 10.30 am read.

The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, who had teamed up for the mayoral elections, protested after the news broke. In the 35-member MC House, the BJP has the most councillors (14), and the AAP is in close second place with (13). There are seven council members in the Congress, and one represents SAD.

The BJP holds an advantage with another vote of local MP and ex-officio member Kirron Kher, but not enough to win against Congress and AAP’s conjoined numbers.

The Aam Aadmi Party claimed that since no BJP council members showed up at the house, they knew that today’s elections would not occur. The Congress declared that it would file a lawsuit to stop the polls from being postponed.

Former MP and senior Congress leader Pawan Bansal said, “The BJP was not ready to face defeat, and they intentionally postponed the elections. If the BJP had believed in democracy, they would have requested that the DC change the presiding officer. This is end of democracy. We will now move to court.”
