Afghanistan’s Second Largest City, Kandahar Falls As Taliban Sets Eyes On Kabul

Kandahar was captured by Taliban on Thursday night and government officials and their team somehow managed to escape the city by air, officials said.

Amidst the withdrawal of NATO and US troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban is constantly gaining control of more provinces. As the world looks in horror at the ongoing bloody conflict in Afghanistan, the Taliban on Friday captured Kandahar, the second largest city in Afghanistan. Taliban claimed on Friday that it had captured another provincial capital, Kandahar, according to AFP. Now only the capital Kabul has remained. Kandahar is the second largest city in Afghanistan after Kabul.

Kandahar was captured by Taliban on Thursday night and government officials and their team somehow managed to escape the city by air, officials said. Since US President Joe Biden announced withdrawal of troops from the war-torm country of Afghanistan, Taliban’s grip on the country is gradually getting stronger. Now the next target of Taliban will be Kabul, but right now Kabul seems out of danger. Indian photo journalist Danish was assassinated by Taliban near Kandahar.

Taliban had seized two more provincial capitals, Ghazni and Herat, on Thursday before capturing Kandahar. The Taliban fighters are just 130 kilometers from Kabul. The terrorist organization has so far captured 12 provincial capitals. In Ghazni, militants hoisted white flags. Sporadic fighting is still going on at a military establishment and intelligence hideout outside the city, two local officials said. Online videos and photos were posted by the Taliban, in which its fighters are seen in Ghazni, the capital of Ghazni province.

The Afghan security forces and the government are reluctant to comment on the days-long fighting. There is no direct threat to Kabul from the fast-expanding Taliban, but its sharp rise raises the question as to how long the Afghan government will be able to control the rest of its territory. The government may be forced to withdraw its steps to save the capital and some other cities as thousands of people displaced by the fighting have fled to Kabul and are living in open spaces and parks.
