State Finance Minister of Germany’s Hesse region was found dead. Authorities said it looks like he has committed suicide.
Frankfurt| State Finance Minister of Germany’s Hesse region was found dead. The authorities said that it appears he has committed suicide. The State governor said that he was in despair over the economic fallout due to the coronavirus crisis.
Thomas Schaefer, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, was found dead on Saturday on the railway tracks at Hochheim near Frankfurt.
Police and Prosecution said that questioning the other witnesses and observing the situation themselves, they came to the conclusion that it was a suicide.
State governor Volker Bouffier suggested that there was a link between the suicide and the coronavirus crisis.
Volker Bouffier said, “Schaefer was worried about whether it would be possible to succeed in fulfilling the population’s huge expectations, particularly of financial help.”
“I have to assume that these worries overwhelmed him. He apparently couldn’t find a way out. He was in despair and left us,” Bouffier further added.
Germany’s federal and state governments have invested huge sums in packages to absorb the economic blow of shutting down the public life amid coronavirus crisis.
Thomas Schaefer was the Finance Minister of the Hesse State for the last decade.
