India Elected As Temporary Member At United Nations Security Council, US Congratulates

A statement was issued by the US after the announcement of India being elected a temporary member at United Nations Security Council.

New York| India has been elected as a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council for the 8th time in 8 years. 193 countries of the General Assembly took part in the voting on Wednesday. 184 countries supported India. The US welcomed India’s temporary membership of the Security Council. It said, “India and America will work together on important issues like peace and security in the world.”

According to the United Nations Charter, India has been elected as a temporary member for two years. Ireland, Mexico and Norway have also been elected provisional members along with India.

The two countries will work together on issues of peace restoration and security in the world. There is a global strategic partnership between the two countries. We want to take it further. “

Pakistan, however, is troubled by India’s temporary membership of the UN Security Council. Before voting, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mohammad Qureshi said -“India’s temporary membership in UNSC is a matter of concern for us. India has always rejected proposals to be raised from this platform. Pakistan has also been a temporary member seven times.”

Why are temporary members elected

The purpose of choosing a temporary member in the Security Council is to maintain regional balance there. Djibouti, India and Kenya are the three candidates for the two seats decided for Africa and Asia-Pacific countries.

In the United Nations with 193 members, India needs the support of two-thirds ie 128 members to win. Member countries vote with the secret ballot. India’s term will begin from 1 January 2021.

When was India elected as a temporary member

India is being elected a temporary member of the Security Council for the eighth time. Prior to this, India has served in the years 1950–51, 1967–68, 1972–73, 1977–78, 1984–85, 1991–92 and 2011–12.

Total 15 countries in the Security Council

There are a total of 15 countries on the United Nations Security Council. It has five permanent members. These are America, Russia, France, Britain and China. 10 countries have been given temporary membership. Five temporary members are elected every year. The tenure of temporary members is two years.
