India, Maldives Sign Agreement For Cooperation In Education Field

New Delhi: India and Maldives have inked an important agreement for cooperation in field of education. On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid have acknowledged strides made in the field of capacity building and training, as signing agreement paved a way for connection between India’s National Knowledge Network and the Maldives’ Higher Education Network.

National Knowledge Network is a multi-gigabit national research and education network, with purpose of providing a unified highspeed network backbone for education and research institutions of India. National Informatics Centre manages this network.

Addressing a joint press conference in presence of Maldives Foreign Minister Shahid after their talks, Jaishankar said, “Foreign Minister Shahid and I acknowledged strides made in fields of capacity building and training. With signing of peering agreement, 1500+ Indian Institutes, Universities and centres of learning from Singapore, Europe and the US are connected to Maldives via India’s National Knowledge Network.”

“Agreement signed between the Maldives’ National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) and NIC is a big and important step for cooperation in field of education, paving the way for connectivity between the Higher Education Network of Maldives and the National Knowledge Network of India,” said Shahid.

A peering agreement is an agreement between two network administrators sharing data routing responsibilities across multiple networks.

Jaishankar arrived at Male as a part of five-day two-nation visit to Maldives and Shri Lanka for exploring the possibilities of expansion of bilateral engagements with the two key maritime neighbors of India.

In the Indian Ocean Region Maldives is one of the key maritime neighbors and the bilateral defence and security ties have been on an upward trajectory in the last few years.
