Nawaz, Maryam to be transported to Adiala Jail through helicopters

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has made arrangements to transport former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam to the Adiala jail upon their arrival at the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore on Friday.

Shahzad Saleem, DG NAB Lahore, had requested for the provision of a helicopter to the chairman of the anti-graft buster for shifting the convicts to Adiala jail in order to avoid any untoward situation. The NAB chief had later forwarded the matter to the interim government, which accepted the request, local media reported.

Nawaz and Maryam will then be directly transported to the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. As many as 22 NAB officials and around 100 elite commandos will be presented at the airport to oversee the transport, as reported by media.

According to a letter, a rally will be held to welcome the father-daughter duo which might hinder the process of their arrest, necessitating the use of a helicopter.

Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan had criticised the PML-N’s move to welcome Sharif and his daughter. “A man does money laundering of Rs300 billion and becomes innocent, and wants himself to be welcomed with claps,” Khan had said.

The preparations for arrest come after an accountability court handed a 10-year sentence and £8 million (Rs1.29 billion) to Pakistan’s former prime minister in a corruption reference pertaining to Sharif family’s Avenfield apartment in London, UK on Friday.

Nawaz’s son-in-law Captain (retired) Muhammad Safdar was sentenced to one year of imprisonment. He was arrested by the NAB after he appeared at a PML-N rally in Rawalpindi.
