The Supreme Court of Pakistan barred Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif from holding any office for a lifetime.
In a landmark judgement, Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Friday disqualified Nawaz Sharif from holding any office. The Ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan had to step down after his involvement in Panama papers came up and was unable to declare the source of his income. Earlier the Supreme Court of Pakistan had barred him from holding the position of political party chief.
This comes as a major setback to the ex-premier of Pakistan as he was aiming at a comeback during the upcoming general elections in June.
Nawaz Sharif was disqualified under Article 62 of Pakistan’s constitution in 2017. The article makes being “Sadiq and Ameen” (honest and righteous) a pre-condition to becoming a member of parliament. Today’s verdict, however, was in response to the pleas that sought to know the time period of a ban on Nawaz Sharif. Along with Sharif, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen was also disqualified.
The court today banned both of them from holding office for a lifetime.
