Tibet can remain a part of China: Dalai Lama

Tibet could benefit economically by staying in China and Chinese citizens could gain from Tibetan Buddhism.

NEW DELHI: Tibet can remain a part of China if Beijing guarantees the region’s culture and autonomy, the Dalai Lama said on Sunday.

In a lecture to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his exile to India, Dalai Lama said that Tibet could benefit economically by staying in China and Chinese citizens could gain from Tibetan Buddhism.

In the lecture organised by the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and the Antar-Rashtriya Sahayog Parishad, the Dalai Lama said “Historically and culturally, Tibet has been independent. The region’s geography shows where Tibet begins. So long as the constitution of China recognises our culture and Tibetan autonomous region’s special history, they can remain [part of China]”.

The lecture was one of the many events planned to celebrate the anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s arrival in India in the late 1950s. The celebrations had started earlier this month with a big event at Dharamsala. The Dalai Lama is likely to tour India throughout the year to celebrate this event.

The Dalai Lama highlighted the point that Tibet had been an independent unit in the past, and therefore had a special place in the world and emphasized the importance of Tibetian identity.

He later added “There was a time when every French looked at the Germans as enemies. But today they are in the European Union. Similarly, we can work together”.

In 1959, the Dalai Lama in fear of persecution from the People’s Liberation Army had escaped to India along with some of his government and around 80 thousand Tibetans.

Government approves security plan worth 2 lakh crore for 50 crore Indians

TestHostEntry

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has given its approval to the labour ministry proposal on universal social security cover for 500 million workers before the all too important 2019 elections.

The finance and labour ministries will work out the details of the scheme that will require nearly Rs 2 lakh crore when fully rolled out for the lower 40% of the country’s total workforce. The remaining 60% of the workforce is expected to make contributions out of their own pocket, either fully or partially.

The idea of the scheme is pretty much self-explanatory; the labour ministry seeks the poorest in line to be aided by the scheme at the earliest and have requested the finance ministry for the same. An official went on to say that the scheme would take at least 5-10 year to come into effect in full force. The official said: “This would require a significantly less amount to start with and the fund allocation to the scheme can be enhanced later over the next 5-10 years to make it universal.”

This will be the second mass-benefit social scheme after the National Health Protection Scheme announced earlier that will provide Rs 5 lakh health cover to 100 million poor families.

The move comes a year before the general elections, indicating that the ruling government is working towards improving its dented image, especially in the farm and agriculture sector.
