Christchurch | Responding to the attacks in the mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said,” One of our darkest days”.
The attack, that killed at least 6 people, was carried out in two mosques and the police have declared there are “multiple fatalities”.
She asserted that the victims may be migrants or refugees. “They are us,” she said. “The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not”.
After the attack, the police ordered a central lockdown of the city, requesting everyone to remain indoors.
“The advice from police continues to be that people remain indoors. I acknowledge that that may mean that some families are separated, but please continue to listen out for information as it comes to light that’s been directly provided by the New Zealand Police with further information”, she requested the citizens to cooperate with the authorities.
“For now, my thoughts, and I’m sure the thoughts of all New Zealanders, are with those who have been affected, and also with their families”, she condoled.
Apart from numerous witness reports of casualties, a reporter following the Bangladesh cricket team, who are currently in New Zealand, tweeted that the team had “escaped from a mosque near Hagley Park where there were active shooters”. The CEO confirmed they will wait for the New Zealand authorities for a nod to continue the tour.
