Washington| Protestors gathered across the United States in several states to demand an end to the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and to support President Donald Trump. The demonstrations happened in multiple states including Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. Sending social distancing for a toss, many carried placards like “Shut down the shutdown” and “This is tyranny, not quarantine”.
In one of the largest gatherings in state of Austin, around 300 people gathered wearing caps, t-shirts showing their support for President Donald Trump. There were chants of “Let us work!” and “Fire Faucci” as many of them were convinced that there was no need for social distancing. Many of them hugged and shook hands at a protest largely influenced by conspiracy-theory peddling website Infowars.
Some protestors were disappointed by the number of people who showed up for the protest. One of the protestors told the Statesman, “We thought it was going to be a lot bigger than this.”
Several hundred people also gathered outside Ohio Statehouse on Saturday to protest the order by the state to stay at home. Chants of “We are not sheep” were heard at the protest.
In Annapolis, though many people gathered, the majority of them chose to stay inside their vehicle and drive around in circles honking. On one of the pickup trucks, a man wrote, “The face mask you were duped into wearing symbolizes you losing your freedom of speech.”
The protests have received support from the White House. ” LIBERATE MINNESOTA!”, “LIBERATE VIRGINIA”, “LIBERATE MICHIGAN”, President Trump tweeted on Friday.
White House adviser Stephen Moore said, “I call these people the modern-day Rosa Parks — they are protesting against injustice and a loss of liberties,” comparing the protestors to one of the most notable civil rights icons.
