New Delhi: Sunday marks the second day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Bhutan. PM Modi will address young Bhutanese students at the Royal University of Bhutan today. Earlier, PM Modi held talks with his Bhutan counterpart Lotay Tshering on various subjects on Saturday. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the steps to further deepen the bilateral partnership between India and Bhutan in various fields. An MoU was signed between New Delhi and Thimphu involving five sectors including hydropower and education. PM Modi has come to Bhutan for the second time and this is his first visit after being re-elected in May this year.
A traditional Chipdrel procession and reception were held for PM Modi at Tashichho Dzong Palace in Thimphu. This event is done to purify the path the guest goes through. Following the grand welcome, PM Modi met the King and Queen of Bhutan. Foreign Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said in a tweet that Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and exchanged “exemplary” ideas that would further the India-Bhutan partnership.

Prime Minister Modi met Jigme Singhe Wangchuk, the fourth King of Bhutan and praised him for his continuous and unique guidance in strengthening relations between India and Bhutan. In a joint statement with Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering, Modi said that the wisdom and foresight of the King of Bhutan have guided long-term bilateral relations. PM Modi said, “Not only this, his vision has presented Bhutan as a unique example for the whole world, where development is measured not by statistics but by happiness. Where economic development follows tradition and environment. Who wouldn’t want such a friend and neighbour? ”
