Ljubljana|: On Friday, Slovenia reopened its borders after announcing an end to its COVID-19 epidemic as they reported less than 10 cases since early May.
“Today Slovenia has the best epidemic situation in Europe, which allows us to call off the general epidemic,” PM Janez Jansa said, two months after the epidemic was announced.
The European country known for its mountains, ski resorts and lakes, with 2 million population had reported less than 1,500 COVID-19 cases & 104 deaths.
However, with the rate of new infections trailing off, the state directed borders to open for all EU citizens, while non-EU citizens will have to stay in quarantine.
“Since the danger of spreading the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains, some general and special measures will remain in force,” it said in a statement, using a technical term for the COVID-19 disease.
People have been asked to wear masks in indoor public spaces, stand at least 5 feet apart and sanitise hands upon entering public spaces.
The country, that borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. had shut all sports and cultural institutions, bars, restaurants, schools, hotels and shops apart from food and drug stores while stopping public transport since mid-March.

Despite Slovenia announcing an end to the epidemic, scientists clarified that the virus was still present in the nation.
Across the globe, 213 countries or territories have been affected by the highly contagious virus.
The top five worst-hit nations are the US, Russia, Spain, Brazil and the UK.
Globally, the total number of COVID-19 cases topped 4,700,000 while the death toll crossed 315,000, as per the latest data from Johns Hopkins University.
The United States is the wost affected country as it recorded 1.55 Million cases of COVID-19 and over 91,000 deaths as per Johns Hopkins University data.
