Tokyo Olympic: In Historic Win, Indian Women’s Hockey Team Beats Australia To Enter Semis For First Time

After beating the mighty Aussies, the Rani Rampal-led side will play Argentina in the semifinal on Wednesday.

The Indian women’s hockey team, in one of the biggest upsets so far in Tokyo Olympic 2020, defeated three-time champions Australia by a solitary goal on Monday. The development came jus a day after Indian men’s team entered the Olympic semifinals following a 49-year gap. The Indian team, being the world no.9 women’s side, was up against world no.2 Australia, a mighty unbeaten opponent, to get a ticket to semifinals in the Tokyo Olympic games. However, determined to prove a point, the Indian team produced a strong and brave performance to eke out the narrow win over the Hockeyroos.

In the 22nd minute, Indian drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur rose to the occasion when it mattered and converted India’s lone penalty corner to strike a surprising blow to the Kangaroos.

India’s best performance in the Olympics came way back in the 1980 Moscow Games where they finished fourth out of six teams. However, back then, women’s hockey made its debut in the Olympics and the sport was played in a round-robin format with top two teams qualifying for the final.
