Trump Signals US May Seek “Substantial” Damages From China Over Covid-19

“We are talking about a lot more money than Germany’s talking about.” Trump said they haven’t determined the final amount yet, but it is “very substantial”.

Washington| US President Donald Trump suggested on Monday that he may seek “substantial” compensation from China over the damages done due to Covid-19 pandemic. The outbreak of Covid-19 began in Wuhan city of China and later spread across the world.

At White House briefing, Trump said, “We are not happy with China. “We are not happy with that whole situation because we believe it could have been stopped at the source.”

“It could have been stopped quickly and it wouldn’t have spread all over the world,” he further added.

“There are a lot of ways you can hold them accountable. “We’re doing some very serious investigations as you probably know,” The US President said.

A reporter asked Trump about the recent bill published by Germany’s one of the leading newspapers asking China to compensate Germany with $165 Billion for the damages caused by Covid-19.

Asked about whether the US will do something similar, Trump said, “we can do something much easier than that.”

Responding to the question further, he said, “Germany is looking at things, we are looking at things. “We are talking about a lot more money than Germany’s talking about.”

Trump said they haven’t determined the final amount yet, but it is “very substantial”.

“This is worldwide damage. This is damage to the US, but this is damage to the world,” Trump added.

the United States has so far reported over 55,000 deaths due to Covid-19 related problems. The pandemic has hammered the economy very badly with tens of millions rendered jobless.
