UNGA| “Ready to mediate if both the sides want”: Donald Trump rakes up Kashmir mediation again

Donald Trump once again raked up Kashmir mediation saying, “At any time, I will be a very good moderator. I have never failed as a mediator.”

New York| US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was ready to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue provided that both sides agree to it on the issue of Kashmir. Trump made the above comment after the meeting with Pakistan PM Imran Khan. Describing the long-pending Kashmir issue as “complicated”, Trump said, “If I can help, I will definitely.”

“If both (India and Pakistan) want, then I am ready to do (mediation). I have a very good relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I also have a very good relationship with Prime Minister Imran Khan .. At any time, I will be a very good moderator. I have never failed as a mediator,” Trump said.

It is known that even during the meeting with Imran Khan at the White House in July, Trump had proposed mediation on the Kashmir issue, which India rejected, citing a bilateral issue.

PM Modi’s statement “Aggressive”

In what can be called as a U-turn, US President Donald Trump called PM Modi’s statement on Pakistan rather “Aggressive”. He said that both the countries are fighting, they have been warring. Trump further said, “I heard very aggressive statement yesterday. I was there. I did not know I was going to hear that statement. I was sitting there and I heard a very aggressive statement from India, from the Prime Minister and I have to say the statement was well received by the 50000 people.” He further expressed hope that both countries will come together and find a solution to the issue.

“Not Pakistan, I was talking about Iran”

Donald Trump was also asked by a journalist whether he endorses a statement made by PM Modi in which he took a sly dig at Pakistan calling it a nation harbouring terrorism. However, Trump said that he was not talking about Pakistan but was talking about Iran.
