US COVID-19 Death Toll Surpasses Vietnam War Toll, Cases At 1 Million

On Tuesday, the United States COVID-19 death toll climbed above 58,000, exceeding the loss of American life from the Vietnam War.

Washington| The COVID-19 death toll surged above 58,000 in the United States on Tuesday, surpassing the casualties of American life from the Vietnam War.

The deaths from COVID-19 in the US have reached 58,351, crossing the 58,220 which the National Archives designates as U.S. losses from battle and other causes, including accidents, in the years-long Southeast Asian war

About 30% of American cases have occurred in New York state, the epicentre of the U.S. outbreak, followed by New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

As of 8:30 pm (0030 GMT), in a 24-hour period, there were 2,207 additional fatalities, the Baltimore-based university said after the daily toll had dropped to around 1,300 on Sunday and Monday.

This comes as Floridaā€™s governor met with US President Donald Trump to discuss lifting lockdown intended to contain the pandemic.

Florida reported its highest single-day fatalities from the COVID-19, and two days before Florida’s stay-at-home order was due to expire.

The United States has entered into a grim situation as it recorded its one-millionth case of COVID-19, about one-third of the entire world’s caseload, as per Johns Hopkins Universiti data.

Medical experts have informed that an unanticipated rollback of social-distancing policies could trigger a resurgence of epidemics just when those restrictions are indicating of bringing the outbreak under control.
