The withdrawal of US forces and its allies from Afghanistan has led to a new crisis : Putin

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday’s September 9th chaired the annual BRICS leaders’ summit.

The theme for the Summit was ‘BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus’.  BRICS acronym stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The leaders who attended the summit includes, Brazil President Jair Bolsanaro, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Russian President Vladimir Putin along with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The summit took off with India’s PM Narendra Modi addressing the BRICS summit, he started off by thanking the world leaders who attended the summit, saying “We (India) have received immense support from all of you, I thank you all.” BRICS has made many achievements in the last one and a half decades. Today we are an influential voice for the emerging economies of the world. This platform has also been useful for focusing on the priorities of developing countries, PM added

“We have to ensure that BRICS is more productive in the next 15 years”- PM Narendra Modi 

Mr Modi, talked about 4 C’s in the BRICS summit. The 4 C’s stand for Cooperation, Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus’ “These four Cs are in a way the fundamental principles of our BRICS partnership” he said.

“It’s a matter of great pleasure for me and India to chair this summit on the occasion of 15th anniversary of Brics” PM added

After Modi, China’s president Xi Jinping carried the summit, he started off by thanking India for its continuous support and its fruitful arrangements, “Over past 15 years, these five nations have enhanced strategic communication and political trust in spirit of openness, inclusiveness and explored sound way to interact with each other” Chinese President Xi Jinping added

He also said “Since the start of this year, our 5 countries have maintained the momentum of Brics cooperation and secured new progress in many areas. As long as we pool our minds and efforts, we can make smooth solid progress in Brics cooperation.”

China committed to donating 100 million more doses of Covid-19 vaccines to developing countries within this year on top of a donation of USD 100 million to COVAX.

Whereas the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro recalled his visit to India fondly, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said their collective response to Covid-19 had demonstrated what can be achieved when they work together.

“As BRICS countries we must continue to safeguard our people’s lives, livelihoods, support global economic recovery and enhance the resilience of public systems” Ramaphosa said.

During the summit, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin expressed his concerns towards the current situation in Afghanistan, he said “The withdrawal of US forces and its allies from Afghanistan
has led to a new crisis.” He also added “Afghanistan crisis is a threat to its neighbours.”

This is the second time Prime Minister Modi is chairing the BRICS summit. Earlier, he had chaired the Goa Summit in 2016. The Indian Chairship of BRICS this year coincides with the 15th anniversary of BRICS. Other thing to note is that the meeting was also attended by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, President of the New Development Bank Marcos Troyjo, the pro tempore chair of the BRICS Business Council, Onkar Kanwar and pro tempore Chair of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance, Sangita Reddy.
