The chief guest for Republic Day is accorded the highest honor in terms of protocol. The chief guest is given a ceremonial guard of honor at Rashtrapati Bhawan, followed by an evening reception hosted by the President of India. A wreath-laying ceremony also takes place in memory of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

India will celebrate its 74th Republic day on 26th January 2023. The 74th Republic Day celebrations will take place on the revamped Central Vista avenue this year. The Central government has put 32,000 tickets on sale online for the public, said defense ministry officials on 19 January. They said that all official invites for the ceremonial event will be sent online for the first time, reported news agency PTI.

Who is the chief guest this year?

It has been an ongoing tradition to invite foreign dignitaries for Republic Day. President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has been invited to attend the grand Republic Day celebration of India.

How A Chief Guest Is Selected For India’s Republic Day?

The process of choosing a chief guest(s) starts six months in advance. Various parameters like foreign policy, political, economic, strategic, and military factors, culture, and tradition are kept in the loop while choosing a chief guest.

Firstly, the Ministry of External Affairs draws a list of names for the same and then sends it to the Prime Minister for approval. After the PM’s approval, it is sent for the President’s nod. After the President’s approval, Indian Ambassadors of the shortlisted countries are communicated with to find out the availability of the dignitary, and then the invitation is officially sent to the chief guest, according to an ABP report.

A Brief History Of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi:

Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi who is throned at the premium post of the Arab Republic of Egypt since 2014 is a retired military officer. The 68-year-old is a retired military officer. He also happens to be the first democratically elected president of Egypt and the first Egyptian leader to be hosted by India for the Republic Day celebrations..

In 2013, Sisi was involved in a military coup that led to the de-throning of Morsi as president. He then ran for office and was sworn in as the sixth president of Egypt in June 2014.

According to Forbes, he secured a second term in office after winning 97% of the vote in the presidential election of April 2018.

Sisi was born in Cairo in 1954. He graduated from the military academy of Egypt in 1977 and went on to train at the UK Joint Services Command and Staff College,

In early 2011, shortly after the Egyptian revolution, Sisi was appointed as the head of military intelligence. One year later, Mohamed Morsi appointed him minister of defense and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

He ascended to power with the military coup of 2013. That was the year when massive anti-Morsi protests rocked Egypt. Sisi was involved in the coup that removed Morsi from office and ultimately ran for president a year later. He swept the election with 96.9% of the votes.
