Election 2019

Former BJP leader Udit Raj joins Congress, removes ‘Chowkidaar’ from Twitter handle

New Delhi | Former BJP leader Udit Raj joined the Congress party today amid the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, likely to contest from North West Delhi constituency.

Udit Raj had previously spoken about the ticket and had threatened the party that if they failed to give him a ticket, he would leave the party.

BJP yesterday fielded singer Hans Raj Hans from the North West Delhi seat instead, on which Udit Raj had won in 2014.

“I will not contest as an independent candidate. They (BJP) are forcing me to leave the party but I have not taken a decision on quitting. I will consult my supporters across the country,” he had said.

Following this Congress gave an official announcement on Twitter, confirming him joining the party.

The BJP member of parliament has been a vocal supporter of Dalits and has often held views contrary to the party’s stand, especially during the Sabarimala issue and “Bharat Bandh” called by Dalit organisations last year.
