SC orders immediate release of BJYM leader for making meme on Mamata Banerjee

New Delhi | Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of BJYM leader Priyanka Sharma for making a morphed image of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Supreme Court bench today while hearing the plea by Sharma passed an order for the immediate release of Priyanka Sharma subject to the condition that she would tender a written apology immediately upon her release. However, the court later modified its ordered and directed Sharma to be released immediately and canceled the condition of tendering an apology. The bench also issued a notice to the West Bengal government over question pertaining to Freedom of Expression.

Representing Sharma, Senior Counsel Neeraj Kishan Kaul stated that the arrest is a gross violation of Constitutional rights. Kaul said that Sharma had deleted the post before she was arrested. This meme is going viral, she is not the only one who shared it “Fourteen days judicial custody for sharing a meme,” he added.

BJYM leader Priyanka Sharma was arrested on Saturday for uploading a TMC chief meme on social media. The meme is a 2019 Met Gala photograph of actress Priyanka Chopra. Mamata Banerjee’s face has been superimposed on the actress’ face.
