“The First Phase of the UP election is hardly 20 days away. The first phase will see the majority of seats from Western Uttar Pradesh go for polling. Now In this western belt of UP, the voices of Sugarcane farmers and the Jat Community dominate the political discourse. This was also the region that had voted for the BJP in large numbers in both 2014, 2017 and 2019 elections. However, the farmer’s protest changed the political geography of the region. Rakesh Tikait emerged as the formidable Farmer leader. The farmers who were once with the BJP, turned against them. Interestingly, in the same period, Jayant Chowdhury’s RLD emerged as the strong party in Western UP with backing of farmers’ and Jat community. The RLD is contesting the UP election in alliance with the samajwadi party. The alliance, seeks to leverage the anger among farmers against the BJP and win maximum of seats in the first phase. In fact, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav recently in an interview given to a private news channel said that the alliance will win 50 seats in the first phase.
While, Akhilesh Yadav seems confident, there are murmurs of discontent among the farmer community especially with regards to a particular seat. However, after the ticket distribution was announced the RLD is facing pushback from its supporters and according to reports, Jat-Muslim fault lines are seemingly reappearing.
How candidate selection on one seat has upset the RLD supporters, Let us understand the issue in detail in today’s video.
