JNU: 16 Injured After Clash Over Non-Vegetarian Food, Case Filed

New Delhi: Officials claimed today that Delhi Police have filed a FIR in connection with a fight between two groups of students on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, purportedly over non-vegetarian food given in the hostel mess on Ram Navami.

As chaos raged on the campus last evening, at least sixteen students from both sides – the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – were injured.

Police said the FIR has been registered based on a complaint filed by members of JNUSU, SFI, DSF and AISA early this morning against unknown ABVP students.

The FIR has been registered under Section 323, 341, 509, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Officials said that ABVP members are also expected to register a complaint today, and that appropriate action will be taken upon receipt of their complaint.

According to the JNUSU, ABVP members prevented students from eating non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess and created a hostile environment. The ABVP, on the other hand, rejected the charge, claiming that “Leftists” disrupted a Ram Navami puja in the hostel.

Both sides have accused the other of throwing stones at their members and wounding them. Following the clash, JNUSU and ABVP students held separate marches inside the university campus to denounce the violence.

Soon after getting the PCR call, police said they raced to the campus with their squads to ensure no further escalation of violence.

“Further probe is on to collect evidence and identify culprits,” officials said.
