BHU Accuses Republic World Of Spreading Fake News, Misquoting Proctor

Amid the row over its VC attending an Iftar organised in campus, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) accused the REPUBLICWORLD.COM of misquoting the BHU chief proctor and showing the BHU administration in poor light. In a tweet from official handle, the BHU condemned the act by the publication to malign the image of the institution.

“An online report published by REPUBLICWORLD.COM has misquoted BHU Chief Proctor, showing the varsity administration in poor light. Banaras Hindu University condemns this attempt to malign the image of an institution of global repute,” said BHU in a tweet.

“Media is expected to inform & update people with correct facts, not twist them. This attempt to serve #FAKENEWS is contrary to duties of media in a democratic set up & #BHU will take due course of action in this matter. Here’s the video statement of Chief Proctor,” the BHU further added, attaching a video of the Chief Proctor’s statement to news agency ANI.

The news item by the Republic World, headed by Arnab Goswami, had stated that the BHU chief proctor has pointed out discrimination on the part of BHU by alleging that no member of the university’s administration had attended a religious event held by a student outfit until BHU vice-chancellor Sudhir Kumar Jain did so. Jain had attended an iftar-roza hosted by BHU’s Women’s College on April 2.

The media has to inform people with facts, and should not twist facts, the BHU said, adding that such fake news is against the media ethics in a democracy.
