Chhattisgarh: CRPF officer killed in exchange of fire with Maoists

Raipur: An Assistant Commandant of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed in an encounter with Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur on Saturday morning, officials said. The incident occurred around 60 km from the district headquarters.

The deceased is identified as Shanti Bhushan Tirkey, a resident of Jharkhand, police officials said.

In this incident a jawan, Apparav, also suffered injuries and is stable, they added.

The firing started around 9.30 am, when a company of CRPF Battalion 168 was on road safety duty, as per the information shared by Bastar IG P Sundarraj.

“The firing started near Dongal Chinta nala near Putkel village. Security forces responded to the fire by unknown Maoists. Additional reinforcement was sent to the spot, and they are searching the area,” the IG said.

Bijapur police is still trying to trace the two men abducted by Maoists on Friday. Sub engineer Ashok Pawar and the head mason working with him on a bridge connecting Bijapur and Narayanpur districts were abducted from Bedre area. They were employed by a private agency.
