Demolition Drive: After Shaheen Bagh, Bulldozers & Forces Reach New Friends Colony

New Delhi: At the New Friends colony security personnel on Tuesday were deployed as the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (SDMC) began its planned demolition drive. A bulldozer was being brought to the area for the anti-encroachment exercise.

The BJP-run civic body conducted the first phase of the anti-encroachment operation in numerous parts of South Delhi. The drive is being conducted from May 4 to May 13.

By the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), an anti-encroachment demolition drive was being conducted in Mangolpuri.

AAP MLA Mukesh Ahlawat said he was against the demolition drive. “When people have vacated the area, why are they (North MCD) creating inconvenience to them by using bulldozers by surrounding them. We are against it and it should be stopped. They need to prove first that there’s encroachment,” Ahlawat was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. 

Mukesh Ahlawat was detained for sometime on Tuesday during an anti-encroachment drive in Mangolpuri. Police said that he was detained so that he cannot cause any disturbance in the governmental work. Ahlawat earlier said, “There was no need for the demolition drive and the civic body should first prove there was encroachment.”

Yesterday a demolition drive was being carried out at Shaheen Bagh. Hours after the drive demolition drive at Shaheen Bagh was disrupted, the Delhi Police has logded an FIR against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan and his supporters. FIR was registered against them for allegedly halting the MCD-led drive on Monday. The FIR under IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assaulting public servant) has been registered on the complaint of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Commissioner take action against Aam Aadmi Party and Congress politicians for disrupting the demolition campaign at Shaheen Bagh on Monday. They demanded that a FIR to be filed against them. After the campaign was halted due to local protests, Delhi BJP President Adesh Gupta wrote to the SDMC Commissioner. According to BJP leader Kapil Mishra, the rule of law is not being followed in places like Shaheen Bagh.
