Jailed Samajwadi Party Leader Azam Khan On List Of Probable UP Protem Speaker

New Delhi: A list of 17 senior MLAs has been sent to the Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel, from which she has to choose the Protem Speaker of the UP Vidhan Sabha, Livehindustan.com reported.

The list also includes name of jailed Samajwadi Party leader and former UP minister Azam Khan. But his chances of making the cut are low as he is currently behind the bars.

Azam Khan, who retained his strong hold of the Rampur Assembly seat, is also the Lok Sabha MP for the region. He must surrender one of the two posts; this will give the ruling BJP another chance to wrest it from the Samajwadi Party, which has won it in every election since 2002.

In a case related to defamation and spreading hatred, his bail was approved last week, but he still remains behind bars over two other cases.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Akash Saxena was defeated by Azam Khan, in last month’s elections with more than 55,000 votes.

Others on the list of 17 sent to the UP governor for consideration of appointment as Protem Speaker include the BJP’s Suresh Kumar Khanna and Samajwadi leader Awadhesh Prasad.

BJP has won UP assembly elections for the second consecutive time. Yogi Adityanath is expected to retain his CM post. The dates of the oath-taking ceremony of Yogi Adityanath and his new cabinet has not been announced yet. It is understood this will be announced based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s availability.

On Wednesday BJP held a meeting to discuss the formation and its new Cabinet.

According to news agency ANI, scores of beneficiaries of various schemes started by the BJP governments at the centre and in UP are likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
