Srinagar: A ferocious gun fight occurred early Friday morning in Jammu between security personnel and terrorists near an army post, two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the region. Officials say two terrorists were killed, one security officer was slain, and four others were injured in the shoot-out.
The clash began after security personnel conducted a pre-dawn operation in Jammu’s Sunjwan cantonment region. Terrorists were allegedly plotting an attack on the city, according to the police. Terrorists attacked a bus transporting CISF officials, killing an Assistant Sub Inspector, according to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
“Two terrorists have been killed in the Sunjwan encounter. Terrorists holed up at Sunjwan were planning a major attack. The aim was to inflict maximum casualties on security forces,” Jammu and Kashmir police chief Dilbag Singh told NDTV.
A CISF official said terrorists attacked a bus carrying 15 personnel in the morning. “The CISF retaliated effectively and forced the terrorists to flee. One CISF officer was killed and two others injured in action,” he said.
The incident comes only days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Jammu on Sunday. Terrorists near a key military installation in the city are a major security concern ahead of his first official visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the former state’s special status was abolished in August 2019.
PM Modi will speak at a large gathering in Palli village, which will be attended by thousands of Panchayat members.
Security has been heightened in anticipation of the visit, with security forces patrolling around the clock to avoid any terrorist attacks across Jammu and Kashmir.
Police received information regarding the presence of at least two terrorists at Sunjwan, according to official sources.
They came under intense fire as they started an operation. During the initial shoot-out, one CISF officer was killed and four others were injured. A ferocious battle has begun.
“We cordoned off the area during the night after we received an input that terrorists are hiding here and planning some action. In the morning, there was firing on the cordon, in which one security forces personnel was killed, and four others are injured. The encounter is going on,” said Mukesh Singh, additional director general of police in Jammu.
The Sunjwan army cantonment was targeted by terrorists in February 2018 in which several people were killed.
Since last month, there has been an increase in terrorist attacks in Kashmir Valley. In targeted attacks, four Panchayat members were killed, and several migrant workers were injured.
Security troops killed four terrorists in the Baramulla district yesterday, including a key Lashkar-e-Taiba commander. The operation, which began early on Thursday, is still ongoing. The presence of a few more terrorists in the target area is suspected by security forces.
