Jignesh Mevani, Gujarat MLA And Dalit Leader, Arrested By Assam Police

Ahemdabad: Jignesh Mevani, a Gujarat MLA who pledged his allegiance to the Congress in September 2021, was detained late last night by Assam Police from a Circuit House in Gujarat’s Palanpur. Last night, he was transported to Ahmedabad, and today, he will be transported to Assam.

Arup Kumar Dey, a BJP leader from Kokrajhar in Assam, had filed a complaint against him.

“Kokrajhar police arrested Congress Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani from Palanpur Circuit House last night,” Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Thube Prateek Vijay Kumar told news agency ANI.

The First Information Report, or FIR, lists charges like criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between communities, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace and sections of the Information Technology Act.

Mr Mevani’s aides had earlier requested a copy of the FIR

Mr Mevani was arrested in Assam, and the Assam Police want to transport him from Ahmedabad to Guwahati today.

Jignesh Mevani is a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Vadgam. He is a former journalist and activist lawyer. He is an independent MLA who has pledged his allegiance to the Congress.

In September of last year, Jignesh Mevani, along with political activist and former JNU students’ union leader Kanhaiya Kumar, held a press conference with Congress’s Rahul Gandhi, during which Mr Kumar joined the Congress party and Mr Mevani extended his support to Mr Gandhi until the end of his term as an independent MLA, after which he would join the Congress.
