Bhopal: During Eid, a complete curfew has been imposed in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh, following communal violence last month during Ram Navami. Eid is most likely to fall on a Monday or Tuesday. The district administration has announced that both of these days would be under curfew.

“Complete curfew will be imposed in the Khargone on May 2 and May 3. Eid prayers to be offered at home,” said Summer Singh, the Additional District Magistrate of Khargone. On these days, shops will remain open and students going for exams will be given a pass, he added.

“Also, no event on Akshaya Tritiya and Parshuram Jayanti will be allowed to be organised in the district,” Mr Singh said.

On April 10, two groups clashed during a Ram Navami parade in Khargone, injuring 24 persons. During the communal skirmishes, a man was murdered, while Superintendent of Police Siddharth Chaudhary was injured.

In the Anand Nagar-Kapas Mandi area, five persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of Ibris Khan. A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a senior police officer. More than 150 persons have been arrested in Khargone in connection with 64 incidences of communal violence.

The state government had instructed authorities to take cautious precautions ahead of the upcoming festivities in the aftermath of the violence. The list included Dr. BR Ambedkar’s birthday, Mahavir Jayanti, Good Friday, and Hanuman Jayanti, in addition to Eid.

“Several festivals are to be observed in the coming days. In view of this, all districts of Madhya Pradesh are on alert. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has instructed all ministers in-charge of districts to keep a watch on the situation in their respective areas as a precautionary measure,” Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra had said.
