Akhil Gogoi arrested in ongoing protest against CAA, sent to 10-day NIA custody

The Assam Police on December 12 arrested Akhil Gogoi from Jorhat and later handed over to the National Investigation Agency

Guwahati: A special court of National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Guwahati, Assam on Tuesday sent Assam peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi to 10-day custody. He arrested under the stringent UAPA amid protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Akhil Gogoi, the adviser of Assam’s farmers’ organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) — was arrested under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in between the protests over the CAA.

The Assam Police on December 12 arrested Akhil Gogoi from Jorhat and later handed over to the National Investigation Agency.

The NIA registered a case under Section 120(B), 124(A), 153(A), 153(B) of the IPC and Section 18, 39 of UAPA.

The NIA had produced amid tight security Akhil Gogoi before the special court which sent him to the 10-day NIA custody.

The special court directed the NIA to ensure regular medical checkups of Gogoi and allow his family members and lawyers to meet him.

Lawyer Shantanu Borthakur said that the NIA has sought 20-day custody but the court granted the 10-day custody.

As the agitator leader was being taken to the court, Gogoi shouted at waiting journalists that he has been subjected to “prochondo atyachar (extreme torture)”.

Gogoi said “The protest must not stop. I urge people to continue the protests till the law is repealed,” he continued as security personnel rushed him to the courtroom.
