Mamata Banerjee calls for UN referendum on CAA-NRC, says BJP should quit if it loses

Mamata Banerjee said that the BJP was trying to portray the protests against the CAA as a fight between Hindus and Muslims in the country.

 

Kolkata| West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned the BJP that it should hold a referendum on the revised Citizenship Act (CAA) and the proposed National Citizens Register (NRC) under the supervision of the United Nations. She further challenged them that if they fail to gain a ‘comprehensive vote’, the BJP should give up power.

Addressing a rally here at Rani Rashmoni Avenue, Mamata Banerjee said that the BJP was trying to portray the protests against the CAA as a fight between Hindus and Muslims in the country. The Trinamool Congress president said, “The BJP has a majority, it does not mean that it can do whatever it wants. If there is courage in the BJP, then it should hold a referendum under the supervision of the United Nations on the issue of CAA and NRC.” She said that if the BJP fails to win a wide vote, then it should give up power.

NRC will not be allowed in West Bengal: Mamata

Mamata Banerjee claims that she has received information that the BJP is buying caps for its cadres who are wearing these and manipulating them to spoil the image of a particular community. Banerjee reiterated that the controversial law and the proposed NRC will not be allowed to be implemented in West Bengal. She said that the BJP was founded in 1980 and it is seeking citizenship document from 1970. She also said that despite enforcing prohibition in various parts of the country to prevent protests, the BJP would not succeed.
