“Mohan Bhagwat wants a two child law, Maharashtra already has several laws on this”: NCP leader Nawab Malik

“Mohan Bhagwat wants to forcefully do vasectomies, We have seen what has happened in past”, Mr Malik recalling the past when Emergency was declared in India

MUMBAI| On Saturday NCP leader Nawab Malik commented on the RSS advocacy of a two-child norm in the nation. While addressing the topic he reminds the memories of the forced sterilisation implementation at the time of Emergency in India.

The NCP leader said relevant laws were already in place in a number of states. If needed let Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a new one if Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the RSS, “wants to forcefully do vasectomies”, ANI reported.

When Sanjay Gandhi launched a compulsory sterilisation programme to check population growth in Congress rule in September 1976. A guest column in India Today’s February 15, 1978 issue said Sanjay Gandhi’s “only weapon” in implementing the family planning programme “was the use of brutal force, unmatched even by medieval barbarity”.

The Congress admitted Sanjay’s excesses during the Emergency in a 2010 book, The Congress and the Making of the Indian Nation, which said “over-enthusiasm led to compulsion in enforcement of programmes like compulsory sterilisation and clearance of slums”.

It acknowledged that Sanjay Gandhi pushed his policies in “an arbitrary and authoritarian manner”, much to the public’s “annoyance”.
