Now a part of Maha Vikas Aghadi, ShivSena opposes Citizenship Amendment Bill

Meanwhile, ShivSena opposes CAB which is designed to persecute Hindu refugees. According to Sena, the bill poses a threat to national security

New Delhi: On Wednesday the Union Cabinet cleared the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill for Parliament to take over. The Bill is now to be tabled in the Lok Sabha for clearance. The Parliament is likely to take up the Citizenship Amendment Bill next week.

Meanwhile, ShivSena which recently had an alliance with Congress and NCP to wrest power in Maharashtra has announced that its MPs would strongly oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill as and when it is tabled in the Parliament.

The Bill seeks to grant citizenship to all non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan if they faced religious persecution in these neighboring countries.

“It has been given clearance and will be discussed once it is tabled in Parliament,” Union minister and BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said while Cabinet briefing.

The Cabinet approval was crucial as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has been strongly advocating a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The Opposition has staunchly opposed both the Bill and the country-wide NRC.

Speaking about the bill, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “I am opposed to the CAB. It is fundamentally against the tenets of democracy. I speak for myself. We are not supposed to discriminate on the basis of religion.”

Meanwhile, ShivSena opposes CAB which is designed to persecute Hindu refugees. According to Sena, the bill poses a threat to national security. ShivSena MP Rajendra Gavit today expressed his strong reservation over the bill during a discussion in Parliament.

Uddhav Thackeray-led party ShivSena said that its MPs will strongly oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 when it is tabled in Parliament by Home Minister Amit Shah during the session.

Opposition parties are once again set to push for the Bill to be referred to a select committee before it is discussed in the Rajya Sabha.
