The Government document also said that for a nationwide NRC, a person will not have to prove his or her ancestry before 1971
New Delhi: After huge protests across the country against the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) government sources on Thursday released a document seeking to bust “misinformation” around the legislation. The document has said that there is no reason for any citizen from any religion to be worried about either the National Register of Citizens (NRC)or the CAA.
The document which is released by the government claims that the CAA is a separate law and NRC is a separate process, and that no individual will be excluded from the NRC on the basis of their religion.
Significantly, the document also says that for the NRC, it will be enough for a person to details of their own birth, and there will be “no compulsion” to submits documents by parents. It stated that no decision has been taken yet on what the acceptable documents are, it also said that they are likely to include voter cards, passports, Aadhaar, licenses, insurance papers, birth certificates, school leaving certificates, documents relating to land or home or other similar documents issued by government officials.
The Government document also said that for a nationwide NRC, a person will not have to prove his or her ancestry before 1971.
