New Delhi: A day after total shutdown in Assam to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, fresh protests erupted in the state on Wednesday when the legislation would be debated in the Rajya Sabha.

In Tripura, two columns of the army were deployed while one was requisitioned in Assam’s Bongaigaon on Wednesday as protests against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill turned violent.

In Assam, a large group of students fought a pitched battle with the police near the state secretariat here, police said. Students in large numbers were seen reaching towards the Secretariat from all directions. Another group proceeded to the Ganeshguri area, around 500 meters from the center of power.

Police said, To tackle the situation, we had to fire rubber bullets and resort to lathi charge on the protestors in Dibrugarh district.

In stone-pelting, a journalist was injured by a mob and the police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them near a polytechnic institute in Dibrugarh town, police said.

On Wednesday no organization called for a bandh, people have come out in large numbers in Jorhat, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur and several other districts early morning.

Officials said that “Tires were burnt and log placed on the roads and rail tracks to stop the movement of vehicles and trains across the state. Teargas shells were also lobbed at the students who threw the shells back at the policemen.

Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse protesters to clear the roads and rail tracks near Chaulkhowa in Dibrugarh.

Rubber bullets were also fired and lathi charge was carried out against protestors at Moran in the district, police said.

Claiming that many of them were injured, the students said, “This is a brutal state government led by Sarbananda Sonowal. We will not yield to any pressure till the CAB is repealed.”
