Nightingale of India: Lata Mangeshkar

Mumbai: Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar, passes away at the age of 92. She was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital earlier last month. She was suffering from covid and pneumonia. On January 30 she had recovered from both. But doctors on February 5 said that her health was deteriorating. 

Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929. She was an Indian playback singer and music director. She is widely considered as one of the greatest and most respected playback singers in India.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was bestowed on her in 1989 by the Government of India. In 2001, in recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour and is only the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this honour. France conferred on her its highest civilian award, the Officer of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.

Lata Mangeshkar was born in 1929, the eldest daughter of Deenanath Mangeshkar, a Marathi and Konkani musician and his wife Shevanti. Lata received her first music lesson from her father. At the age of five, she started to work as an actress in her father’s musical plays. 

As a musical gem she needs no introduction. With her phenomenal work, she created a big identity in this world. She is popularly known as the ‘Nightingale of India.’
