PM Modi To Hold Meet On Ukraine Crisis

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be meeting today the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other officials amid discussing the economic impact of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis. They will also discuss the ways to mitigate the impact of rising crude oil prices, a government source told news agency Reuters.

Russian forces have fired missiles on the various cities of Ukraine. They have landed their troops on the coast officials and media said after President Vladimir Putin authorized what he called a special military operation.

Earlier the Indian Embassy in Ukraine said that special flights had been arranged for Kyiv for bringing back the Indian nationals, but were canceled as the country’s airspace was closed.

Now the nation is looking for an alternative route to evacuate Indians from Ukraine after an Air India flight turned back or Delhi due to the closed Ukrainian airspace.

At the Ministry of External Affairs, high-level meetings are being held for working out the contingency plans and finding out an alternate evacuation route, said sources.

“More Russian-speaking officials have been sent to India’s embassy in Ukraine and are being deployed in countries neighboring Ukraine, “MAE said.

The Indian Embassy has set out guidelines for the students and others who live in the country. Kyiv is one of the cities being attacked by Russia. 

The Indian Embassy has issued a warning and said, “Citizens traveling to Kyiv, including those traveling from western parts of Kyiv, are advised to return to their respective cities temporarily, especially towards safer places along with the western bordering countries.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been urging global leaders to provide defense assistance to Ukraine and help protect its airspace from Russia.

In a statement that comes amid Russia’s wide-ranging attack on Ukraine that began early Thursday, Zelensky said that Russia “has unleased a war with Ukraine and the entire democratic world”.

He asked for world leaders to provide large-scale defense support and to protect Ukraine’s airspace from the “aggressor”.

Ukraine believes that India is one of the countries who can influence Russia. Ukrainian Ambassador to India Igor Polikha said in a media briefing streamed on Facebook, “There are few nations in the world which can influence Russia, and India is one of them.”

Russian forces fired missiles at several cities in Ukraine and landed troops on its coast on Thursday, officials and media said. Gunfire rattled near the capital’s main airport, the Interfax news agency said, and sirens were heard over Kyiv.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused UN chief Antonio Guterres of being “susceptible to pressure by the West” and making statements on Ukraine that are “not compatible with his status”.

The US Embassy encouraged Americans in Ukraine to shelter in place amid Russia’s military mobilization.
