Puducherry: 120 Detained After Black Flag Protest Against Amit Shah

Puducherry: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on a one day visit to Puducherry. He is here to participate in the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of revolutionary-turned-philosopher and saint Aurobindo.

Amit Shah also launched projects under the Smart City initiative. Before wrapping up his visit, he addressed BJP office-bearers and workers in the Union Territory.

However, his visit witnessed a storm. Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) staged a black flag protest against him.

At Kamarajar Salai, more than 200 TPDK cadres gathered. They waved black flags and raised slogans protesting against the Home Minister’s visit.

Police had to interfere as the protesters brought in an effigy to burn. This led to a scuffle. Around 120 TPDK cadres were detained.

Meanwhile, the Congress, CPIM, CPI, CPIML and VCK held protests against Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit at Saaram.  The protestors were sloganeering against the BJP leader, and were claiming that he was imposing Hindi to remove Tamil.

Former Puducherry Chief Minister Narayanasamy, also joined the demonstration. He stated that they were protesting as the UT was ignored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

“It’s been a year and till now, none of the poll promises given by PM Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah have been fulfilled. Welfare schemes have been sidelined and that’s why we are protesting here,” he said.
