“Sahab Is Back With Gift “: Pawan Khera’s Jibe At Govt Over LPG Price Hike

New Delhi: On May 7, the rate of domestic cooking gas has been raised by ₹ 50 per cylinder. This is the second increase in its prices in two months. The price hike in cooking gas rates comes days after the commercial LPG cylinder rate was hiked by ₹ 102.50. National spokesperson for the Indian National Congress (INC) Pawan Khera took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent Europe tour saying ‘sahab is back after 65 hours, 60 photoshoots across three countries with this gift of LPG price.’

Addressing the press conference, Pawan Khera said, stated that the Center was creating a burden on common people. “Modi govt told people to give up subsidy. In 2015-2016 was reduced to 18 crores and in 2017 it was reduced to Zero. On daily basis you creating more burden on people,” the Congress leader said.

Speaking of the time when Congress was in power he said the Congress govt helped and supported the poor and middle class. The subsidy was given by Congress to ensure the burden of high prices is not put on people.

Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala in a tweet said that LPG is becoming out of reach to poor and middle-class households. Taking a jibe at BJP, he tweeted, “The cost of subsidised cooking gas has increased by 2.5 times and it has become out of reach to poor and middle-class households,” while sharing the price comparison between 2014 and 2022.

He is worried about price hike. He raised concerns over increasing the price by ₹100 within the last 45 days. The cost was earlier increased by ₹50 on March 22.

Surjewala revealed that the cost of cooking gas had jumped by 585.50 since May 2014, when it was Rs. 414. He urged that the price be reduced to match the rate in 2014. He went on to say that the then-Congress government paid LPG subsidies worth Rs. 39,558 crore in 2012-13 and Rs. 46,458 crore in 2013-14.
