Sri Lanka: Ex-PM, Family Flees To Naval Base Amid Protests

Colombo: After it was discovered that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and some of his family members were finding refuge at the Trincomalee Naval Base in Sri Lanka, protests ensued.

As per a media report by NewsWire, The ex-Prime Minister and his family were housed at the naval installation after vacating their official mansion in Colombo. It was stated in a tweet that a protest was taking place in front of the Trincomalee Naval Base, where former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family were allegedly staying

On Monday, violence erupted in the island nation as Rajapaksa loyalists attacked nonviolent anti-government protestors demanding his removal. Five people were killed in Monday’s unrest in the country, according to the authorities.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, 76, resigned as Prime Minister just hours after the attack.

Protesters set fire to the Rajapaksa family’s ancestral home in Hambantota as the violence in the country escalated.

The country has been facing the worst economic crisis that led to acute shortages of staple food, fuel and power.
