Sunil Jakhar Joins BJP Soon After Quitting Congress

Chandigarh: Former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in Delhi on Thursday afternoon.Mr. Jhakar joined the party in the presence of BJP national chief JP Nadda at the party headquarters in the national capital. This move had brought a huge setback to Congress.

Jakhar, the Congress party’s Hindu face in Punjab, is the son of the late Balram Jakhar, a veteran Congress leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker. Sandeep Jakhar, his nephew, is a Congress legislator from Punjab’s Fazilka district.

Given Jakhar’s seniority in Punjab politics and oratory talents, his joining the BJP will be a major boost for the party as it strives to expand its wings in the province.

Mr Jakhar said “Goodbye and good luck, Congress” in a Facebook live video after blistering criticism of former party colleagues who led the effort against him while the party was attending a three-day brainstorming session in Rajasthan.

Mr Jakhar had also chastised the party leadership for nominating Mr Channi as Chief Ministerial candidate for the polls, as well as Ms Soni for allegedly sabotaging his chances of succeeding Amarinder Singh as Chief Minister.

Ms Soni had said she turned down an offer for the Chief Minister seat and urged the leadership that only a Sikh should be chosen for the office during the Punjab Congress’s turmoil following Amarinder Singh’s resignation in September.
