Tamil Nadu Government Shuts Schools, Postpone Exams

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government amid the spike in the cases, has shut the schools and postpone the exams. government today announced holidays in schools for Class 10 to Class 12 students till January 31. The government also postponed the exams that were scheduled to be held from January 19 for Classes 10 to 12.

The state government has announced holidays for class 1 to 9, while physical class for Classes 10 to 12 were still going on. The education department has now taken the decision to close schools for these classes too as the coronavirus cases are rising at a rapid speed in the southern state.

Meanwhile, amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases, all roads of Tamil Nadu’s districts, including Chennai and Madhurai, wore a deserted look as the state observed a complete lockdown today. At present, Tamil Nadu’s active case tally stands at 1,31,007, while the state reported 23,989 new Covid cases and 11 fatalities on Saturday. A total of 36,967 have succumbed to the fatal infection to date.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced to impose a complete lockdown on Sundays until January 31 to contain the virus. The state is already under the night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am on all days.

Thiruvananthapuram: A sexual assault case has been lodged against a senior official of the Adani-run Thiruvananthapuram International Airport here, following which the company has suspended him from service.

Thumba police on Saturday registered a case against Chief Airport Officer (CAO), Madhusudana Rao, based on a complaint filed by a woman employee working under him.

Police said a case has been registered under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code including section 376 (Rape).

“As per the complaint, the incident happened on January 4. We have some evidence against him. The probe is on. However, the accused is not at his residence here and his phone is switched off,” police told PTI.

According to the complaint, the accused invited the survivor to his apartment and attempted to molest her.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the airport issued a statement confirming that they received a complaint of sexual harassment from an employee and said the company has zero tolerance for such behaviour.

“We have received a complaint of sexual harassment by a Thiruvananthapuram airport employee. We have zero tolerance for such behaviour. The safety and well-being of every staffer is our top priority and we have taken this complaint very seriously. The employee has been immediately suspended from service,” the spokesperson said.

The statement said the airport authority was thoroughly assessing the facts and would fully assist investigations.
