New Delhi: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday for describing the demolition effort in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri neighbourhood as a “demolition of India’s fundamental values,” and claimed that no political party is “more communal” than the grand old party.
“I have never seen a Political Party in India which is more Communal than Congress Party. There’s no difference at all between Congress Party & Muslim League or Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen,” Mr Rijiju tweeted.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had taken to Twitter to hit out at the BJP government for the demolition and said that the party must “bulldoze the hatred in their hearts instead”.
“This is a demolition of India’s constitutional values. This is state-sponsored targeting of poor & minorities. BJP must bulldoze the hatred in their hearts instead,” Mr Gandhi tweeted.
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), which is run by the Bharatiya Janata Party, had previously scheduled a “encroachment removal action programme” in which unlawful construction in the Jahangirpuri neighborhood would be dismantled.
Later, on Wednesday, the Supreme Court ordered the registry to notify the North Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor, North DMC Commissioner, and Delhi Police Commissioner of the status quo order, thereby halting the demolition operation.
Earlier this month, during a religious procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, a confrontation between two groups erupted, injuring nine persons, including eight police officers and a civilian.
