Mumbai: Sanjay Pandey has been appointed as Mumbai Police Commissioner. The former Director-General of Police is set to replace Hemant Nagarale, who is the present Commissioner of Police in Mumbai. Hemant Nagarale has been transferred from the post of Commissioner and has been handed over the responsibility of Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC). Recently, Rajneesh Sheth was appointed as the Director-General of Maharashtra Police. After this, Sanjay Pandey has been given the responsibility of the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner. Mr. Pandey is in Chandigarh right now, HW News has learnt.
An IPS officer of the 1986 batch, Sanjay Pandey is an IIT graduate from Kanpur. In 1998, he went to Howard University for further studies and pursued a master’s degree.
During the communal riots of 1992-93, when there was an atmosphere of tension and violence in the whole Mumbai, Sanjay Pandey was serving as DCP. He had brought the violent situation under control in Dharavi. He was also highly praised by the Sri Krishna Commission for bringing the situation under control. During that time he had a dispute with some leaders in power. But he did not bow down.
Mr. Pandey has investigated many big cases. He had tried to resign once but his resignation was not accepted.
In 1995, as DCP of the Narcotics Department, he had cracked down many drug rackets in the city. While in the Economic Offenses Wing in 1997, Abhuday Bank scam and the leather scam was investigated and corruption was exposed.
In SPG in 1999, he was posted under the protection of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
In the year 2014-15, while in the Legal Metrology Department, he had exposed many illegal activities of the builders. He had caught them scamming and manipulating the carpet area of the flats. Action was also taken against the Lodha builder.
In the year 2015, he became the ADG of Home Guard and then became DG too. After the Antilia scandal, Parambir Singh was brought in instead of Sanjay Pandey and Sanjay Pandey was sent to the Maharashtra State Security Council.
