“Will Quit Politics, Upset With Political Parties,” Says Ghulam Nabi Azad

New Delhi: Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has indicated that he would quit politics and has said that he is disappointed over political parties, including the Congress, for creating division among the people. Azad is one of the G-23 dissidents.

He said, “We have to bring about a change in society. Sometimes I think, and it is not a big deal that suddenly you come to know that I have retired and started doing social service.”

Addressing an event at Jammu on Sunday, he said that political parties work for creating a divide amongst the people based on caste, religion, and other things. He won’t forgive parties for this divide. He said, “Political parties work to create a divide, 24×7, amongst people based on religion, caste, and other things. Be it my party or any other regional or national party, I am not forgiving any of them. Civil society should stay together and fight against the evils.”

Blaming politicians for the evil in society, he said, “We (political parties) divided people based on region, village and cities, Hindus and Muslim, Shia and Sunnis, Dalit and non-Dalit, divisions in backward classes also. Now, who remains to be a human in all this? Human values have lost priorities amidst the decline.”

He said that politics in India has become so ugly that at times one doubts that he is a human or not. He said that communal polarization in the country has increased.

Azad on Sunday said, “Pakistan and militancy” were responsible for what has happened in Jammu and Kashmir. His comments come amid the ongoing controversy over the recently released Bollywood film ‘The Kashmir Files’ which depicts the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir in the 1990s following systematic killings of people from the community by Pakistan-backed terrorists. “I believe that Mahatma Gandhi was the biggest Hindu and secularist. Pakistan and militancy are responsible for what has happened in Jammu and Kashmir, it has affected all Hindus, Kashmiri Pandits, Kashmiri Muslims, Dogras,” the Congress veteran said in Jammu.

The movie, written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri and produced by Zee Studios, has triggered a political swarm.

“Political parties may create a divide 24×7 on basis of religion, caste, and other things… I am not forgiving any party including mine (Congress)… Civil society should stay together. Justice must be given to everyone irrespective of caste and religion,” news agency ANI quoted Azad as saying.
