At least five coaches of Puducherry-bound passenger trains derailed near Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram railway station on Tuesday morning.
The loco pilot of the train moved to stop the train immediately to avert any major accident.
Railway staff said, “All passengers were safely evacuated from the train, adding that no injuries were reported,” quoted news agency PTI.
They further added, “The cause of derailing would be known only after an inquiry into the same is completed.”
“Staff and engineers have been rushed to the site, and active repair work on the derailed train is underway,” Railway officials added.
The MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train left Villpuram at 5:25 am. While crossing the curve, the coach derailed, and the loco pilot swiftly stooped the train.
A MEMU train is a short-distance train that covers about 38 kilometres.
The in-depth inquiry into the incident has started by the Villupuram Railway Police.
