When does Muhurat trading happen?

Muhurat Trading

Muhurat Trading time is 6:15 and 7:15 on the evening of Diwali

New Delhi: Muhurat trading is a one-off activity which happens at the Indian stock market during Diwali. It is between 6:15 and 7:15 on the evening of Diwali.

It is one of the traditions which had maintained links of the trading community, which mostly used to be Gujarati community, with its rich past. Before this session starts, investors place token orders and buy stocks for their children, which are held for the long-term and sometimes never sold. During the Muhurat session, these traders normally book their intraday profits, however small they may be. It is customary for stock brokers to perform Lakshmi Puja at the exchange and then the Muhurat trading takes place. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi comes and resides at the place of puja which is why traders and shopkeepers stay awake with all decorative lights.

Stock brokers perform ‘Lakshmi Puja’ at the exchange and the customary Muhurat trading takes place. It is believed that on the night of Lakshmi Puja, the Goddess comes to reside at the place of the puja during which the traders and shopkeepers stay awake with lights burning all night.

How did it start?

The tradition started with the first traders in the country. A puja is performed, new accounts are opened and new shares are bought on Diwali, marking the start of the Hindu New Year. It is believed that this would begin the new year on a right note.

However, this trading has a flip side because it is highly volatile during this session. The Muhurat trading session is an excellent time to buy or sell stocks since the trading volumes are high.

Tejas Joshi

Veeranna Somanna, the Minister of Infrastructure Development in Karnataka government, caught on camera slapping a woman at an event where he was distributing land titles. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, amid criticism and outrage over the incident, has sought an explanation from the minister. As per Hindustan Times report, the woman reportedly confronted the minister at the event following which the minister slapped her. A few security personnel are seen in the now viral video, whereas many men also intervened after the minister slapped the woman.

Congress’ Randeep Surjewala said: “Arrogance has gone to the head of BJP Ministers & leaders in #Karnataka. On one hand, people suffer the huge brunt of #40PercentComission & on the other, women get slapped by ministers drunk with power. Where is our PM? Will u dismiss the Minister, Mr. Bommai? #AntiWomenBJP.”

The woman, in the video, is later seen touching the feet of the minister after being slapped. The HT report stated that the minister is learnt to have apologised for his behaviour, while the woman too later claimed that the minister promised her help.

Congress’ communications chief Jairam Ramesh also took to Twitter and wrote: “What a difference from the way @RahulGandhi began the Karnataka leg of #BharatJodoYatra from the very same Gundlupet on 30th September! This shameless man should be sacked immediately!”

Congress’ official handle also posted the video and wrote: “Karnataka’s BJP government minister V Somanna slapped a woman. The crime of the woman was that she went to the BJP minister with her complaint. Now read the statement of PM Modi – ‘Can we take a pledge to get rid of everything that humiliates women by nature, by culture?'”
