Covid Update: 8,309 New Covid Cases registered in India, 236 related deaths

New Delhi: India reported 8,309 new COVID-19 cases and 236 related fatalities on Monday, pushing the overall case tally to 3,45,80,832 and the death count to 4,68,790, according to the Health Ministry bulletin.

During the same period, 9,905 recoveries were reported throughout the country. With this, the national recovery rate currently stands at 98.34 per cent, which is the highest since March 2020. The active cases in the country stood at 1,03,859 on Monday, the bulletin further showed.

New Covid variant, ‘Omicron’ which has been declared as a variant of concern by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has triggered global worry. The variant was first detected in South Africa earlier this month. Since then, the new strain has already been detected in several European countries. Omicron is said to be much more infectious than the Delta variant.

Saudi Arabia has withdrawn its ban on travellers from India, the Centre on Monday informed the Kerala High Court during hearing of a plea by a man seeking a third jab of an internationally accepted vaccine so that he can go back to the Gulf nation for work.

COVID-19’s Omicron variant appears to be more transmissible, reinforcing the need for Americans to get vaccinations or booster shots, US health officials said.

Omicron “is a clarion call” for people to be vaccinated, Anthony Fauci, who is President Joe Biden’s top medical adviser, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Infections in the US are already rising and stepped-up prevention with the emergence of the new variant will impact whether Americans are “headed into a bleak or bleaker winter,” he said.

8,309 fresh coronavirus cases in India, marginally lower than yesterday.

Thane has reported 108 new cases of coronavirus, raising the infection tally in the Maharashtra district to 5,69,161, an official said on Monday.

A 32-year-old resident of Dombivli in Mumbai, who arrived from South Africa via Delhi on November 24, tested positive for coronavirus upon arrival. Health officials are yet to examine if he is infected with the Omicron variant of Covid-19.
