Hurriyat chairman, Police Head Constable’s son joins militant ranks

Srinagar, March 24: Junaid Ashraf, son of newly appointed Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) chairman Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai has joined the militant outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

This has come to light after his photograph with a rifle and other details went viral on social media. The photograph shows that he joined the outfit on 24 March 2018 and his code name as Amaar Bhai.

Sehrai took over the leadership of the Hurriyat – the hardline pro-freedom party – last week from Syed Ali Geelani. The two have been close associates for more than last six decades.

According to family sources, Junaid didn’t return home after Friday prayers after which a missing report was lodged by the family today.

Director General of Police (DGP), SP Vaid has requested the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman Sehrai and families of other youth who have joined militant ranks to persuade their sons to “shun the path of violence” and return to their homes.

Junaid a resident of Takipora, Lolab of Kupwara district at present Jehangir Colony in Baghat, Srinagar, is an MBA student at Kashmir University.

Police, on the other hand, is ascertaining the authenticity of the picture and have started investigations.

Meanwhile, another picture of a youth Aabid Maqbool Bhat resident of Khangund, Tral, wielding a gun has also gone viral on social media.

Abid is the son of a police head constable Mohammad Maqbool and has joined militant outfitJaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) with a code name of ‘Umar Bhai’.

Pertinently, two more youths namely Bilal Ahmad Shah and Manan Wani- a Ph.D. scholar had also joined the militant outfit, a photograph of whom were also viral on social media.
