Japan’s 2024 Births Reach All-Time Low; For 8th Consecutive Year

Preliminary government data released on Tuesday revealed that in 2023, Japan experienced an eighth consecutive annual decline in births, reaching a historic low. Births plummeted by 5.1% to 758,631, while marriages also decreased by 5.9% to 489,281, dipping below 500,000 for the first time in 90 years. This trend signals a potential further population decline, as non-marital births are uncommon in Japan.
